Rethinking Analog Effects and Animation Practices
Pour une reconsidération des effets visuels analogiques et des pratiques d’animation

This issue aims to restore much-needed scholarly attention to analog effects and other hands-on approaches to filmmaking in analog and contemporary digital cinema. Special effects have become a growing area in film studies with the rise of digital cinema since the turn of the century, sparking renewed interest across academic writing, popular culture, journalism, and fandom. Scholars such as Warren Buckland, Stephen Prince, Charlie Keil, Kristen Whissel, and Julie A. Turnock have primarily focused on the cinematic realism of CGI and its ubiquitous use in Hollywood mainstream cinema. Furthermore, as Dan North, Bob Rehak, and Michael S. Duffy point out, scholars such as Prince adopted the premise that “everything once we thought as ‘special effects’ can now be understood as digital phenomena, fully integrated with the storytelling apparatus of mainstream film-making” (2015, 21). This erasure of boundaries between digital and analog gives the impression that studying what is digital can account for all effect processes. However, monopolizing our attention over digital effects should not come at the expense of “historically grounded analysis of the multiple, complex and varied ways in which film fabricate and frame their representational terrain” (2015, 21). The digital turn does not completely erase analog effects: they continue to coexist with CG methods, generate new aesthetics and rhetorics, and gain new areas of use in filmmaking contexts beyond Hollywood. The academic fixation on digital effects also obscures the diversity of topics that could be studied within the wider field of animation studies. Lev Manovich's (1996) definition of digital cinema, as a form of animation that uses photographic images as one of its graphic resources, opened at the time important reflections about the nature of cinema, animation, and CGI. The digital effects appeared then to be a very productive subject to study relations between animation and cinema. Animation is not, and never was, only one technique, but rather a wide set of practices. Studying only digital effects limits our vision to only one of the many crossroads between live-action and the diversity of animation, while each of these points of convergence is the key to another aspect of cinema as a whole.
Departing from the Hollywood-dominated prior literature, this issue seeks to shed light on the economical, aesthetic, and political implications of using analog effects and animation techniques in national and transnational frameworks. According to Turnock (2022), the effects industry leader ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) has engendered an aesthetic for effects realism powerful enough to draw companies within and beyond Hollywood to adhere to its stylistic standards. Diverging from these standards may align with ideas of political or economic resistance or asserting cultural or national specificity, thus creating diversity in the face of Hollywood’s homogenizing impact. Revisiting the analog approaches of the analog era also deepens our understanding of film history. Studies by Julie A. Turnock (2012), Laura Mulvey (2012), Vivian Sobchack (2014), and Ariel Rogers (2019) on the standardization of rear projection in the 1930s offer a renewed perspective on how this once-despised technique does more than clash with the transparent aesthetic of classical Hollywood cinema, as its “clumsy visibility” (Mulvey 214) can also produce a distinctive aesthetic impact that advances the narrative. Scholars have debated whether the transition from analog to digital cinema (and thus from analog to digital effects) should be seen as a radical rupture or a historical continuum. In both cases, analog effects of pre- and post-digital cinema activate important questions that shouldn’t be overshadowed by the dominance of Hollywood’s effects realism in recent scholarly writings. As Dan North, Bob Rehak, and Michael S. Duffy write, “the narrative input of special effects to the overall impact and import of a film is never simply the direct transposition of events in a screenplay to images on a screen, but the technological mediation of those events” (2015, 27). Referring to King Kong, they argue that Kong would have evoked a different set of meanings if played by an actor in a gorilla suit. Similarly, the deliberate preference for analog effects produces narrative meanings distinct from those that could have been generated by CG-dominated imagery. The preference for ‘analog’ over ‘digital’ also foregrounds labour-related questions. The use of analog techniques, such as stop-motion animation, requires specific material—an articulate puppet, a miniature landscape, as in the case of Kong— long shooting periods for the animator to operate one frame at a time and often a large team of skilled practitioners. These factors, alongside the marketing discourses foregrounding the “handmade” and human status of analog approaches, may obscure or even legitimize exploitative labour practices.
We thus look for submissions that study the economic, aesthetic, and political implications of using analog effects, whether through a renewed focus on film history or contemporary counter- or beyond-Hollywood filmmaking practices.
Papers that are submitted to this issue of Synoptique may include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

Essays submitted for peer review should be approximately 5,500-7,500 words. Submissions for the non-reviewed section should be approximately 1,500-3,500 words. Reviews should be approximately 2,000 words. All submissions must conform to Chicago author-date style (18th ed.). All images must include photo credits and captions.
We also welcome reviews of relevant recent books, films, conferences, and film festivals.
Video essays submitted for peer review; interventions such as visual reconstitutions of film and animation production processes, or relevant archives are also accepted. These can be submitted in digital video, still images, or multimedia formats and will be hosted or embedded on the Synoptique website, and/or otherwise linked to in the PDF version of the journal.

Ce numéro vise à rendre aux méthodes analogiques (que ce soient les effets pratiques, optiques ou en animation) l’attention académique qui leur est due, aussi bien en ce qui concerne le cinéma analogique que le cinéma numérique contemporain. Accompagnant l’essor du cinéma numérique de ce début de siècle, les effets spéciaux constituent un domaine foisonnant qui a suscité un regain d’intérêt au sein de la communauté académique, la culture populaire, le journalisme, et les communautés de fans. Certain.es théoricien.nes comme Warren Buckland, Stephen Prince, Charlie Keil, Kristen Whissel, ou Julie A. Turnock ont porté une certaine attention au réalisme des images de synthèse dans le cinéma, et leur omniprésence dans le cinéma grand public hollywoodien. De plus, comme ont pu le remarquer Dan North, Bob Rehak et Michael S. Duffy, des théoricien.nes comme Prince partent du postulat que “ce à quoi l’on pensait auparavant comme étant des ‘effets spéciaux’ peut à présent être entendu comme des phénomènes numériques, totalement intégrés dans l’appareil narratif des pratiques cinématographiques grand public” (2015, 21). Cet effacement de la démarcation entre le numérique et l’analogique semble impliquer que l’étude du numérique engloberait l’étude de tous les effets visuels. Cependant, accorder notre attention aux effets numériques ne doit pas se faire aux dépens d’une “analyse historique ancrée dans la considération des façons multiples et variées par lesquelles le cinéma fabrique et encadre ses représentations” (2015, 21). Le tournant numérique n’a pas totalement effacé les effets analogiques: ils continuent de coexister avec les images de synthèse, de générer de nouvelles esthétiques et rhétoriques, et de se déployer dans des nouveaux contextes cinématographiques au-delà d’Hollywood.
Qui plus est, la concentration de l'intérêt académique sur les effets numériques a aussi tendance à invisibiliser la diversité des sujets qui pourraient être explorés dans le champ plus vaste des études sur l’animation. Lev Manovich (1996), avec sa définition du cinéma numérique comme une forme d’animation qui utilise des images photographiques en tant que ressources graphiques, a provoqué, à son époque, d’importantes réflexions sur la nature du cinéma, de l’animation, et des images de synthèse. Les effets numériques étaient alors considérés comme un sujet d’étude extrêmement productif pour l'analyse des relations entre l’animation et le cinéma. L’animation ne consiste pas, et n’a jamais consisté, en une seule technique, mais au contraire en un vaste ensemble de pratiques. Ne porter attention qu’aux effets numériques limiterait notre vision à une seule des nombreuses intersections entre le cinéma en prise de vue réelle et l’animation, alors que chacun de ces points de convergence constitue une nouvelle clef de compréhension du cinéma dans son ensemble.
Visant à s’éloigner de certains écrits trop centrés sur Hollywood, ce numéro vise à mettre en lumière les implications de l’usage des effets analogiques et des techniques d’animation à un niveau économique, esthétique, et politique, dans un cadre aussi bien national que transnational. Selon Turnock (2022), ILM (Industrial Light and Magic), leader dans l’industrie des effets spéciaux, aurait créé une esthétique singulière, basée sur une forme de réalisme, assez puissante pour attirer des entreprises, hollywoodiennes, et autres, et les amener à adhérer à ses standards stylistiques. Diverger de ses standards pourrait alors être une forme de résistance politique ou économique, ou une manière d’affirmer une spécificité nationale ou culturelle, créant ainsi une diversité s'opposant à l'homogénéité hollywoodienne. C’est en revisitant les approches analogiques dans leur contexte que nous pouvons approfondir notre compréhension de l’histoire du cinéma. Les études de Julie A. Turnock (2012), Laura Mulvey (2012), Vivian Sobchack (2014) et Ariel Rogers (2019) sur la standardisation de la rétroprojection dans les années 1930 offrent une perspective renouvellée sur la manière dont cette technique, autrefois dénigrée, fait plus qu’entrer en dissonance avec le régime de transparence du cinéma hollywoodien classique, mais produit avec sa « visibilité maladroite [clumsy visibility] » (Mulvey 214) un effet esthétique singulier avec une visée narrative.
Au cœur des débats théoriques se trouve la question du passage du cinéma analogique au cinéma numérique (et avec lui, des effets analogiques aux effets numériques): Doit-il être perçu comme une rupture radicale, ou partie d’une continuité historique? Quelle que soit la réponse, l'existence d'effets analogiques dans ces deux cinémas engendre des questions importantes, qui ne doivent pas être écartées au profit du réalisme des effets Hollywoodiens qui sont le sujet en vogue dans les écrit dans les écrits académiques récents. “L’apport narratif des effets spéciaux sur l’impact général d’un film n’est jamais simplement la traduction directe des événements du scénario en images sur un écran, mais plutôt de la médiation technologique de ces événements” (2015, 27), écrivent Dan North, Bob Rehak, et Michael S. Duffy. À propos de King Kong, ils avancent que Kong aurait eu un ensemble de significations différentes s’il avait été simplement joué par un acteur dans un costume de gorille. Parallèlement, la préférence délibérée pour les effets analogiques produit des significations au niveau de l’intrigue différentes de ce qu’elles auraient été, provenant d’images de synthèse. La préférence pour ‘l’analogique’ contre ‘le numérique’ met aussi en lumière des questions liées au travail manuel. L’utilisation de techniques analogiques, comme l’animation d’image par image, requiert l’utilisation de matériaux spécifiques—une marionnette articulée, un paysage miniature dans le cas de Kong,—de longues périodes de tournage pour que l’animateur.ice puisse opérer image par image, et, souvent, une grande équipe de praticien.nes qualifié.es. Des facteurs qui, en conjonction avec un discours commercial mettant en avant l’aspect ‘fait main’ et humain des approches analogiques, risquent d’obscurcir, voire de légitimer, des pratiques d’exploitation dans le milieu du travail.
Nous recherchons donc des contributions portant sur les implications économiques, esthétiques, et politiques de l’usage d’effets analogiques, que ce soit à travers une nouvelle attention portée à l’histoire du cinéma, ou des pratiques contemporaines allant à l’encontre des standards Hollywoodiens.

Les essais soumis à l'évaluation par les pairs doivent comprendre entre 5000 et 7500 mots. Les essais pour la section sans révision par les pairs doivent comprendre entre 1500 et 3500 mots. Les critiques doivent comprendre approximativement 2000 mots. Toutes les soumissions doivent adhérer au style Chicago auteur-date (18ème édition). Toutes les images doivent être créditées et accompagnées d’une légende.
Nous acceptons aussi des critiques d’ouvrages, films, conférences, et festivals de cinéma, qui soient récents et pertinents.
Les essais sous format vidéo soumis au comité de révision; des interventions comme des reconstitutions visuelles de films et de processus de production d’animation, ou autres archives pertinentes, sont aussi acceptés. Ceux-ci peuvent être soumis sous format de vidéo numérique, d’images statiques, ou autres formats multimédias, et seront affichés ou intégrés sur le site de Synoptique, et/ou reliés à la version PDF du journal.

Baptiste Mesot is a third-year Ph.D. student in the Department of History and Aesthetic of Cinema, at Lausanne University (Switzerland). He is working in an FNS project about the history of Swiss animation led by Professor Maria Tortajada, in collaboration with the cinémathèque suisse. His communications, publications, and teachings mainly focus on European and American cartoons. He blends an anthropological approach of animation as a skill-based practice in circulation through society, an historical perspective of the conditions of the emergence of animation trends, and the aesthetic and discursive analysis of the films.
Zeynep Aras is a second-year Ph.D. student in Film and Moving Image Studies at Concordia University (Montreal). She received her MA in Media and Visual Studies from Bilkent University (Ankara). Her master’s thesis examined analog effects in post-digital cinema by focusing on the work of contemporary French directors. She received her BA in Aesthetics and Practice of Cinema from the Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. The article “Les filles de Méliès: l’exception culturelle, analogue aesthetics and women filmmakers of le cinéma-monde,” which she co-authored, has been published in French Screen Studies. She is the co-editor-in-chief for the Synoptique: An Online Journal of Film and Moving Image Studies.
